Poulner Scouts - Helping Develop Scouting in Malawi

scouts and leaders will travel to Malawi in Summer
2008 in order to undertake various good works and
charitable projects.
Total
costs are estimated at £33,000 which will
be funded partly by those going, from grants and
from general fundraising activites.
We
need your support - you can donate through this
site or send donations of any kind, items for auction/
raffle / your support at our fundraising events.
Some
basic information about Malawi
-
Malawi is the 7th poorest country in the world
- It has a population of approximately 12,5 million;
of those 750,000 are orphans, a figure increasing
by 65,000 a year
- Over 200 people die of AIDS each day
- Life expectancy in 1997 was 41; now it is 36
- 48% of children in Malawi are chronically malnourished
- In the last decade maternal deaths in childbirth
have increased by 100%
- One in four children die before the age of five
- 7% of the population have electricity
- 42% of the population are illiterate
The basic aims of the trip
1.
For Poulner scouts to visit young people of their
own age and younger in local schools and scout groups
2.
To promote the twinning of 1st Poluner scouts with
scout groups within Malawi
3.
To work and play with local young people and to
gain an understanding of theirt way of life and
cutlure
4.
To promote the growth of two scout groups at Mzuzu
and Chinteche
5.
To promote a focus for the whole of the scout group
6.
To achieve the scouting 'Whole Group International
Award'.
